Council Report for SUMA 2011    by: Mayor Garth Harris

SUMA consisted of three days of meetings which included educational sessions, annual meetings, numerous addresses, sector meetings and breakout forums. There were dialogues with each government ministry or face to face meetings. SUMA ended with a Bear Pit with cabinet, with many questions about government services, programs and funding levels.

 I saw many frustrations from the SUMA delegates over a range of topics most notably Dr. Retention and hospital building fund buy in at the local level. Our communities are fortunate to have our project completed as construction today would be significantly more costly at approximately $15,000,000 as opposed to the $10,000,000 spent two years ago.

Another frustration which we have handled in Preeceville is Continuity Planning. In other words, how we continue to do business or run our town in an emergency situation. “I have taken a day session on this topic and council and staff along with our partners have a comprehensive emergency plan in place should the need arise. An example of this is the flooding Preeceville experienced last summer. We are attending a provincial meeting on the topic this week to better prepare ourselves for this spring”.

 The SUMA Convention facilitates much networking between many communities and various other sectors. Many of our local issues are a commonality between the dignitaries and the government officials attending who are all working for acceptable outcomes.” I feel our local government is good government”.

A big attraction is the 160 booths at the trade show which is an A to Z of community support systems and services to purchase.
