This week we focus on: Private Service Home Week
Approved private service homes and approved mental health homes are private homes in communities which provide support for people with intellectual disabilities or mental health needs. These homes make it possible for residents to experience family living in a community setting. There are currently 202 approved private service homes and 180 approved mental health homes in Saskatchewan.
“Approved private service homes and approved mental health homes not only provide the opportunity to develop social, recreational and life skills, but they create inclusive communities,” Social Services Minister Paul Merriman said.
The Mental Health and Addictions Action Plan identifies supportive housing as a priority to help secure better outcomes for people living with complex mental health and addictions issues.
“Mental health approved homes provide an important service to individuals living with complex mental health needs,” Health Minister Jim Reiter said. “We "Should all" recognize their commitment to their clients, and thank them for their good work.”
Saskatchewan Approved Private Homes Inc. (SAPH) is a registered non-profit organization and professional association that provides information, education, resources and supports to approved private service home providers and promotes approved home development across the province.
"Saskatchewan Approved Private Service Home Week is an opportunity to celebrate those individuals who open their hearts and share their homes with this province’s most vulnerable citizens," SAPH Executive Director Iris Miller Dennis said.
This work supports the Saskatchewan Disability Strategy which was released in June 2015. It focuses on six priority areas including: transportation, respite, accessibility, residential services, service co-ordination and navigation, and awareness/understanding of the rights of people experiencing disabilities. Saskatchewan residents and communities that have done work which aligns with the Disability Strategy are encouraged to share their accomplishments using the hashtag #SKDisability. The Saskatchewan Disability Strategy Facebook page can be found at www.facebook.com/skdisability."

Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday February 15th, 2018 8:35 am
With GX94's Craig Wallebeck > see him @ http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-Wallebeck
This week we focus on: Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week
February 11-17, 2018 as Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week in the province.
“This week is an opportunity for Saskatchewan residents to recognize and celebrate our teachers and school staff,” Deputy Premier and Education Minister Gordon Wyant said. “Education professionals in our province work tirelessly to educate and inspire students to reach their full potential and engage in lifelong learning.”
Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week is acknowledged annually across Canada to highlight the invaluable work of education professionals in our schools. This year, the Saskatchewan Association of School Councils (SASC) has chosen the theme Inspiration Through Learning.
"Teachers and staff inspire and motivate learners when they provide students with opportunities to understand, develop and practice positive attitudes and actions that will result in the achievements of their goals and dreams,” SASC Director Joy Bastness said. “They inspire new understanding and skills, initiate new experiences, spark students' interest and enthusiasm, while infusing learning with life and a desire to learn.”
This marks the 31st year that Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week will be celebrated in Saskatchewan.
School Community Councils (SCCs) work with parents and community members to:
share responsibility for the success and well-being of all children and youth; and,
encourage parent, community and youth engagement in school planning and improvement.
Membership
Roles and Responsibilities
SCCs consist of two types of members – elected and appointed. At minimum, SCCs consist of:
five to nine elected parents and community members. The majority of these members must be parents or guardians of students that attend the school;
- appointed members that include:
- the principal;
- one teacher; and
- one or two students from grades 10-12 (if applicable), and
First Nations representatives if students live on-reserve
SCCs can recommend that the board of education appoint other members to the council to increase the representation on the council and to encourage community engagement.
The roles and responsibilities of SCCs include:
encourage parent and community participation in education;
- developing a good understanding of their community including its needs, resources, supports and goals for student learning and well-being;
- cooperating with school staff to develop school-level plans;
- communicating annually with families and community members about their activities and accomplishments;
- accounting publicly for money they spend;
- participating in orientation, training, development and networking opportunities related to SCCs;
upholding confidentiality; and,
- following legislation, regulations and board policies.
SCCs may also provide advice and recommendations to their boards of education, school staff and other organizations about the learning needs and well-being of students.

Safety Management System - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday February 8th, 2018 8:35 am
Working Draft for:
Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday February 8th, 2018 8:35 am

This week we focus on: Safety Management System
2017 in review> from the news > reading and understanding how it fits with your town.
An SMS provides a systematic way to identify hazards and control risks while maintaining assurance that these risk controls are effective.
In the defining statements of a safety management system, safety can be defined as:"a businesslike approach to safety. It is a systematic, explicit and comprehensive process for managing safety risks. As with all management systems, a safety management system provides for goal setting, planning, and measuring performance. A safety management system is woven into the fabric of an organization. It becomes part of the culture, the way people do their jobs"
... the reduction of risk to a level that is as low as is reasonably practicable.
There are three imperatives for adopting a safety management system for any business – these are ethical, legal and financial.
There is an implied moral obligation placed on an employer to ensure that work activities and the place of work to be safe, there are legislative requirements defined in just about every jurisdiction on how this is to be achieved and there is a substantial body of research which shows that effective safety management (which is the reduction of risk in the workplace) can reduce the financial exposure of an organization by reducing direct and indirect costs associated with accident and incidents.
To address these three important elements, an effective SMS should:
- Define how the organization is set up to manage risk.
- Identify workplace risk and implement suitable controls.
- Implement effective communications across all levels of the organization.
- Implement a process to identify and correct non-conformities.
- Implement a continual improvement process.
" compliance with occupation health and safety regulations may not be good enough"
So says a court of appeal for Ontario.
The courts reason:
"Compliance does not exhaust an employer's statutory duties under OHSA. It is possible to comply with all regulations and at the same time violate the broader statutory duty to take all reasonable precautions to protect the health and safety of a worker"
Question: When you should review and update your plans?
I would say now!
- Implement a continual improvement process.
A safety management system can be created to fit any business type and/or industry sector.
Safety management basic components are:
- Policy
- Organizing
- Planning and implementation
- Evaluation
- Action for improvement
"It's lots to think about but the most important work any group can do"
