100 Years of Highways - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday July 27th, 2017 8:35 am

Working Draft for:

Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday July 27th, 2017 8:35 am

With GX94's Craig Wallebeck > see him @ http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-Wallebeck

This week we focus on: 100 Years of Highways

"The 100 Year Highways Journey"

"Released on July 20, 2017 The Government of Saskatchewan is proud to announce that this year marks the 100th anniversary of the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure.

“We’ve come a long way in the last one hundred years; from building roads with a horse and scraper, to asphalt pavement, and now to overpasses and highways with 25,000 vehicles per day,” Highways and Infrastructure Minister David Marit said. “During the last century we’re pleased to have had the privilege of employing thousands of professional men and women who have had excellent careers working with the Ministry of Highways and Infrastructure.”

In 1917, The Highways Act came into effect, which ceased the existence of the Board of Highway Commissioners and gave birth to a new ministry — the Department of Highways.

Things were different back then — William M. Martin was Premier, there were horse-drawn buggies on the road, ferry operators were paid $3 per day and the equipment used to build and maintain highways was much different.

As the ministry continues to build and maintain Saskatchewan’s highway infrastructure, we would like to remind drivers to observe the posted speed limits in construction zones and slow to 60 km/h when passing highway workers and equipment.

If you’re planning a trip this summer, check the Highway Hotline at www.saskatchewan.ca/highwayhotline. The Highway Hotline provides up-to-date information on construction, emergency road closures, the status of ferries, barges and other road activities.

A weekly construction update is also published on www.saskatchewan.ca/residents/transportation/highway-construction-projects/weekly-highway-construction-update to provide the travelling public with the latest details on projects underway to help plan safe and efficient travel.

The Government of Saskatchewan has invested $7.4 billion in transportation infrastructure since 2008, improving more than 12,000 kilometres of Saskatchewan highways.

- Old Home Week is a practice that originated in the New England region of the United States, similar to a holiday or festival. In its beginning, in the 19th - 20th century, it involved a municipal effort to invite former residents of a village, town, or city - usually individuals who grew up in the municipality as children and moved elsewhere in adulthood - to visit the Old Home, the parental household and home town.

Our idea is to have events around one week each summer so our former residents and guests can be as busy as they please while checking out what's new in town.

Free Fishing Weekend - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday July 6th, 2017 8:35 am

Working Draft for:

Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday July 6th, 2017 8:35 am

With GX94's Craig Wallebeck > see him @ http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-Wallebeck

This week we focus on: Free Fishing Weekend

Saskatchewan’s annual summer free fishing weekend is July 8 and 9.

"Since 1989, one weekend is designated each summer when residents and visitors may fish in any of Saskatchewan’s public waters open to sport fishing without purchasing a fishing licence.

“Sport fishing is one of many outdoor activities that Saskatchewan has to offer,” Environment Minister Scott Moe said. “This weekend is an excellent opportunity for people of all ages to enjoy the sport of fishing and to recognize the importance of our fish and aquatic resources.”

Each year, approximately 250,000 people sport fish in Saskatchewan, including more than 50,000 out-of-province anglers.

Anyone planning to take advantage of the free fishing weekend is reminded that all other fishing regulations, including possession limits and reduced limits on some lakes and rivers, remain in effect. Free fishing weekend does not apply in national parks and anyone taking fish out of the province must purchase a licence.

More information about fishing in Saskatchewan can be found in the 2017 Anglers’ Guide, available wherever angling licences are sold, or online at
www.saskatchewan.ca/fishing"
"Saskatchewan’s waters provide us with many recreation and economic opportunities. At the same time, protecting fisheries for future generations takes the continued efforts and co-operation of everyone who enjoys fishing, also known as angling.
Buy an Angling Licence Buy a hunting, angling or trapping licence through HAL – the government’s hunting, angling and trapping licence system.

Please note:
Regular angling limits and all other sport fishing laws remain in effect.
The free fishing weekend does not apply in national parks.
