This week we focus on: Community Support for Pink Day is needed Every Day
"Saskatchewan Proclaims Red Cross Pink Day"
Released on February 24, 2016
"Today, Education Minister Don Morgan proclaimed February 24 as Red Cross Pink Day. Pink Day is observed across the province to raise awareness of bullying and the importance of preventing it. This year’s theme is Let’s change the culture around bullying together!

“Creating schools and communities that are free of bullying is important for the youth of our province and their families,” Morgan said. “Pink Day is a great opportunity for us to continue encouraging students to do whatever they can to prevent bullying. The Red Cross does an excellent job of engaging our students in this initiative every year and I commend their hard work.”

Pink Day is a national bullying prevention initiative led by provincial Red Cross chapters. The event builds on the pink shirt movement that began in 2007 when two Nova Scotia high school students inspired their fellow students to wear pink when they saw a another student being bullied. Since then, wearing pink has become a symbol of speaking out against bullying rather than remaining a bystander.

“The Canadian Red Cross is thrilled that the Government of Saskatchewan is recognizing this worldwide movement to create safe and respectful schools and communities,” Red Cross Vice-President of Saskatchewan Cindy Fuchs said. “We are proud to partner with the Ministry of Education to reach thousands of youth with bullying prevention education each year.”

In addition to celebrating Pink Day across the province, the Government of Saskatchewan funds a number of initiatives to support Saskatchewan's Action Plan to Address Bullying and Cyberbullying.

The 2015-16 Budget allocated $655,000 to support the recommendations in the Action Plan. Resources for students, families and schools can be found on www.iamstronger.ca. Youth can also apply for grants of up to $1,000 each for initiatives that promote kindness, address bullying and influence positive social change in their schools and communities.

For more information about Pink Day or to buy a pink t-shirt, visit https://campaigns.redcross.ca/.

You can also add your voice on social media by adding the hashtags #PinkDay, #ImagineNoBullying or #CultureChange to content that supports the prevention of bullying. To learn about anti-bullying initiatives in Saskatchewan, please visit www.saskatchewan.ca/residents/education-and-learning/anti-bullying."
Question: What are we doing as communities to support all this work?
Does your community need a anti-bullying bylaw?
Harassment in all it's forms is not acceptable. Unacceptable‭ ‬behavior‭ ‬from‭ ‬anyone‭ ‬will‭ ‬not‭ ‬be‭ ‬tolerated. When ‬asked‭ ‬to‭ ‬stop the‭ ‬unacceptable‭ ‬behavior, it ‬is‭ ‬expected‭ ‬to‭ ‬stop ‬immediately. Community leaders ‬may‭ ‬take‭ ‬any‭ ‬action‭ ‬they‭ ‬deem‭ ‬appropriate,‭ ‬up‭ ‬to‭ ‬and‭ ‬including any and all bylaws, Provincal and Federal laws.
http://mayorharris.blogspot.ca/2014/09/anti-bullying-bylaw-relook.html
Does your community need a Code of Conduct? Goes hand in hand with a Anti-Bullying Bylaw.
Our community is made up of families, business owners, working professionals and volunteers. Each with it's own set of strengths, each with it's own set of rules, few that everyone follow. Here we have a draft code that we ask people to adhere to when you are living, doing business or visiting our community.
"Personal harassment is any unwanted activity or behavior directed at an individual
that creates a negative, hostile, or unwelcoming environment for that individual. Personal
Harassment is not covered by The Saskatchewan Human Rights Code because it is not
connected to one of the prohibited grounds of discrimination. However, this policy also
prohibits the kind of personal harassment prohibited by The Occupational Health and
Safety Act, 1993:" “forms of personal harassment with respect to any matter or circumstance
arising out of the worker’s employment, which includes bullying and abuse
of power.” Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993.

code of conduct
- a set of conventional principles and expectations that are considered binding on any person who is a member of a particular group
http://mayorharris.blogspot.ca/2014/09/preecevilles-code-of-conduct-relook.html

"A summary offence is a crime in some common law jurisdictions that can be proceeded against summarily, without the right to a jury trial and/or indictment (required for an indictable offence)"

A local bylaw is a step between talking about it and a indictable charge.

This week we focus on: Community Access Program
"Youth internships (YI) at community access sites are coordinated by Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada and are funded through the Canada's Youth Employment Strategy which is overseen by Employment and Social Development Canada. The internships are intended to provide employment opportunities for young Canadians between the ages of 15 and 30, primarily students, recent graduates, the underemployed and the unemployed"
Program description

Youth internships at community access sites help Canada create jobs and other social, educational and economic benefits associated with the expanded use of information and communications technology (ICT). The Youth Internship (YI) Program is integral to the Youth Employment Strategy, with ICT-related not-for-profit organizations providing job opportunities for over 1,000 young Canadians each year.

The YI Program is intended to provide Canadian youth with work experience and ICT skills to make them more productive and competitive in the knowledge economy and to encourage not-for-profit groups across Canada to develop and use ICT in their organizations.
The objectives of youth internships are
to assist more young people in gaining the skills and experience needed to successfully transition into, and remain in, the labour force; and
to encourage not-for-profit organizations across Canada to develop and apply ICT-related skills, knowledge and opportunities by helping them to create internship opportunities.

Youth interns work at community access sites across Canada helping individuals, community organizations and small businesses improve their knowledge and effective use of the Internet and related information technologies.
Specific activities may include
delivering Internet training sessions
researching and developing websites
drafting publicity materials
organizing information fairs and special events
providing technical support to the community access site"

Preeceville CAP Site is located in the Preeceville Public Library and provides people of the community with free internet access, computer help and different classes and workshops held throughout the year. This week we focus on: Take the Flag!

“The flag is the symbol of the nation’s unity, for it, beyond any doubt, represents all the citizens of Canada without distinction of race, language, belief or opinion,” declared the Speaker of the Senate at the Inauguration of the new flag in 1965.
On February 15, 1965 our national flag was raised for the first time on Parliament Hill. Canada was just two years away from centennial celebrations when the maple leaf flag was made official by Royal Proclamation. In 1996, February 15 was declared National Flag of Canada Day and has been observed every year since.
Additional information:
In 2016, the National Flag of Canada is celebrating its 51st anniversary. Canadians are invited to celebrate this important symbol of our Canadian identity by organizing their own events and by showing their pride on social media"

Share your moment with the flag!

"Celebrate the 51st anniversary of the National Flag of Canada by taking part in the “Share your moment with the flag” Challenge.
This challenge gives us an opportunity, as Canadians, to honour the National Flag of Canada, a symbol that is recognized and respected around the world and an enormous source of pride.

How do I take part?

It’s very simple: Take a picture or a video! Share it! Spread the word!
  • Take a picture or video of you and the flag. You can also use an existing one.
  • Share it on social media with the hashtag #CanadianFlag
  • Challenge your family and friends to do the same.
Search for the hashtags #CanadianFlag and #drapeaucanadien on Twitter to see the photos and videos of everyone who took part in the challenge.
Express yourself, it is worth celebrating in style!" http://canada.pch.gc.ca/eng/1448567781606

"A symbol of Canadian identity"
"The official ceremony inaugurating the new Canadian flag was held on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on February 15, 1965, with Governor General Georges Vanier, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, the members of the Cabinet and thousands of Canadians in attendance"
