The Ham Exam is a closed-book exam.
If you are one of the Preeceville Air Cadets, you already have a sheet of paper containing four of the many things you need to commit to memory:
- The International Phonetic Alphabet
- The “Q” Codes
- The Resistor Colour Codes
- And the circle containing all the derivatives of Ohm’s Law.
Of course, you might want to immerse yourself in the
mumbo-jumbo that surrounds resistor colour codes, as well as Ohm's Law already - by the time we get to it in the course,
it'll be old hat to you already!
You to have two things in this course:
You to have two things in this course:
- Success
- Fun
When you pass the Ham Radio examination, you will receive a
free one-year membership of:
How you fare in the examination:
“Next Time”
If you get anything lower than 70%, you’ll have to write again to pass, because 70% is the lowest you can get in the exam if you want a licence.
Never give up, though - folks like you and I just don't know how to give up; we leave it to others
Basic
If you get anything between 70% and 80%, you’ll have passed your Basic Amateur Radio Examination, and you will be legally entitled to transmit and receive on all frequencies from 50 MHz and above.
Basic with Honours
If you get anything from 80% upwards, you will have passed Basic with Honours. That will give you the right to work on the shortwave, or “HF” Bands. That’s the bands on which Single Sideband and digital modes are mostly used. If you’ve been to the parsonage - by the way, you’re always welcome to pop by when I’m home; it’s best to give me a call first, though: (306)-614-9227 - you’ll see that I have long wire antennas above the roof. That’s because the HF bands have wavelengths from 160 to 10 meters.
Your Voice Is Needed, and a radio you’ll have
When the fertilizer hits the propeller and telephone, cellphone and internet communications fail, the Town Office, RCMP, Fire and Ambulance Services, as well as other social assistance organizations, will need you. That’s why you need to pass your ham exam.
Because Ham Radio is a service.
(What this does NOT mean, though, is that you’re not supposed to enjoy it!)
The Answers
You’ve got Industry Canada on your side - there are exactly five hundred questions in the examination, and if you’re very good at memorizing, you’ll get 100% by merely memorizing them.
And Industry Canada has posted them for everyone, together with their answers.
Over here You can download the PDF file and start poring over it.
Practice makes Perfect
You can practice for the ham examination online, on the Industry Canada website:
Examine Thyself If Thou Be Ready
You might as well try your hand at a full “Dry Run” exam.
Generate a practice exam, and print it, the questions, the test sheet and the answer sheet, and see how you fare.

The Technology
Passing the Ham Examination is very important indeed.
But an exam passed by memorizing the answers to the questions will not make you proficient at anything.
During the course, we’ll be getting down to the nuts and bolts of radio theory.
You’ll be learning electronics.
One great site to learn about electronics, is https://www.electronics-tutorials.ws/ Of course, YouTube is an excellent way to learn not only about electronics, but even to prepare for the Canadian ham exam:
