National Forest Week - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday Sept 22nd, 2016 8:35 am

Working Draft for:

http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-wallebeck

This week we focus on: National Forest Week

"National Forest Week, September 18 to 24 this year, is an annual celebration highlighting the important role forests play in our environment and economy.  National Tree Day, observed on the Wednesday of National Forest Week, focuses on the value of trees, especially in our cities and towns.

“Saskatchewan’s forests cover 34 million hectares, more than half of our province,” Environment Minister Scott Moe said.  “National Forest Week is a great time for everyone to consider the many ways that forests and trees add to our lives, every day.”

The week’s theme this year is ‘True North, Strong and Green’, referring both to the band of boreal forest that stretches across the country, and to Canada’s place as a world leader in forest stewardship and innovation.  Saskatchewan’s forest industry contributes significantly to the provincial economy, while playing a critical role in sustainable forest management.

“Saskatchewan’s large forest companies develop 20 year forest management plans that demonstrate how they intend to operate while ensuring the forest’s long-term sustainability,” Moe said.  “Our diverse forest sector also has the highest proportion of Aboriginal ownership and participation in Canada, providing jobs and economic development for Saskatchewan people, particularly in northern Saskatchewan.”

Saskatchewan’s globally competitive forest industry includes 10 large forest products manufacturing facilities, producing lumber, pulp and panels, and more than 100 small forest businesses producing a variety of forest products.
In 2016, the Ministry of Environment’s forest renewal program planted 1.7 million seedlings in Saskatchewan’s provincial forests, with millions more planted by industry"
History

"Established circa 1920 as Forest Fire Prevention Week, the intention was to encourage greater public awareness towards Canada’s forests.  At the time, there was no apparent shortage of trees for industrial expansion – the greatest threat came from forest fires, due mainly to human causes.  Since then National Forest Week, as it was renamed in 1967, has evolved to encompass the many and varied human and environmental aspects of Canada’s forest resources – past, present and future.  Although special activities are promoted across Canada, National Forest Week remains first and foremost a challenge to individual Canadians to learn more about their forest heritage and support greater recognition of this valuable resource"

Elm Tree Pruning - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday Sept 15th, 2016 8:35 am

Working Draft for:

With GX94's Craig Wallebeck > see him @
http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-wallebeck

This week we focus on:  Elm Tree Pruning

Saskatchewan’s annual ban on elm tree pruning ends August 31.  Homeowners can prune their elm trees starting September 1.

Pruning elm trees is prohibited from April 1 to August 31 each year to reduce the risk of Dutch elm disease (DED).  The elm bark beetles that spread the disease are most active at this time, and fresh cuts can attract them to healthy trees.

Regular pruning outside the ban period helps keep elm trees healthy and better able to resist all types of disease, including DED.  Removing dead branches makes trees less attractive to elm bark beetles.  Early fall can be a great time for tree maintenance; the weather is generally more pleasant than in early spring and, with leaves still on the trees, it’s easier to spot and remove dead or unhealthy branches.

Proper pruning is important, whether you hire someone or do it yourself.  Pruning incorrectly can spread DED and other tree diseases.  Under provincial regulations, all commercial pruners of elms must complete a recognized training program or be supervised by someone who has.

It is illegal to transport or store elm firewood; the wood attracts beetles that can spread DED.  Dispose of elm wood promptly by burning or burying it in a location approved by the local municipality.  For more information on proper elm disposal, check with your local municipal authority.

For more information, or if you suspect an elm tree may have DED, call the Ministry of Environment’s general inquiry line at 1-800-567-4224.

School zone safety - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday Sept 8th, 2016 8:35 am

    Working Draft for:
Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday Sept 8th, 2016 8:35 am

With GX94's Craig Wallebeck > see him @
    http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-wallebeck

This week we focus on:   School zone safety

"With classes back in session, school zone safety is the traffic safety spotlight for the month of September.
Police will be watching for traffic violations in and around school zones, including motorists speeding, driving distracted, failing to obey stop signs or yield signs, failing to yield for pedestrians, failing to obey crossing guards or failing to obey school bus cross arms and flashing lights.
“Children are among the most vulnerable road users and as a motorist it’s your duty to look out for them,” said Earl Cameron, Executive Vice-President of the Auto Fund. “It’s critical to slow down and give the road your full attention in school zones. Not only does the small size of a child make them difficult to see, they can also be unpredictable as they may not yet understand rules of the road.”
During drop-off times school zones can become extremely congested with traffic and children, making it even more difficult to identify hazards. In 2014, there were 40 collisions in school zones in the province, resulting in 15 injuries.
When it comes to children and vehicles, there is little margin for error. SGI recommends motorists keep the following tips in mind when travelling in or near school zones and playgrounds:     ·    Reduce speed to the posted limit and be prepared to stop.
    ·    Familiarize yourself with school zone locations and hours of operation. Unless you need to be in a school zone, plan a different route.
    ·    Avoid distractions and give the road your full attention.
    ·    Expect the unexpected and drive carefully, even if you have the right of way.
    ·    Use caution when approaching or manoeuvring around school buses.
    ·    Obey the direction of any signage, traffic control devices or crossing guards.
Throughout the 2016 school year, some school buses across the province will begin to use exterior overhead amber flashing light systems when preparing to stop, in addition to overhead red flashing lights that are used when a bus is stopped to pick up or drop off students. The amber lights provide an advanced warning to motorists, allowing them more time to slow down and safely react. Bylaws dictating the use of warning lights (and school bus traffic control devices, such as a stop arm) are dependent on the municipality. It’s important to familiarize yourself with bylaws in your area.
Visit SGI’s website at www.sgi.sk.ca to learn more about school zones or pedestrian safety.
