Government Proclaims Red Tape Awareness Week in Saskatchewan

Released on January 22, 2018

"The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed the week of January 22-26 as Red Tape Awareness Week in the province.  The week highlights the importance of regulatory modernization and the provincial government’s ongoing effort to reduce red tape for Saskatchewan businesses and consumers.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) hosts a number of activities during this year’s Red Tape Awareness Week.  The CFIB’s annual Golden Scissors Awards are to be announced on January 26.  The awards acknowledge the work of an elected official or others in government across Canada who have reduced regulatory burden for business.

Two nominees within the Government of Saskatchewan are finalists for this year’s award:
  • Premier Brad Wall is nominated for sustained leadership in red tape reduction; and
  • SGI is nominated for reducing red tape by streamlining bridge permit approvals for commercial and farm trucks.
“Our commitment to reduce red tape was evident in the past year as we once again exceeded our annual cost savings targets,” Economy Minister Steven Bonk said.  “We are pleased to be recognized by the CFIB for this important work, and we will continue to strengthen our province by reducing red tape and supporting the citizens and businesses we serve.”

“We commend the Government of Saskatchewan for their ongoing leadership to make red tape reduction a priority,” Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) Vice-President, Prairie & Agri-business Marilyn Braun-Pollon said.  “We are especially pleased with the government’s mandated use of the Direct Cost Estimator, which is among the most comprehensive cost estimation tools in Canada.  Use of this tool has resulted in nearly $90 million in savings for both business owners and the government by reducing red tape.”

Government’s 2016-2017 Regulatory Modernization Progress Report identified $72.6 million in red tape cost savings, as part of its Red Tape Reduction Action Plan.  This includes activities from across government ministries, agencies and crown corporations.

Since 2014, the province has:
  • exceeded targeted quantified cost savings of $5 million annually, having identified $88.2 million in forecast cost savings for red tape reduction initiatives, $60 million above the targeted amount for the 10 year period, and
  • remained on schedule to keep the commitment to review all business related regulations at least once every 10 years.
Regulatory accountability in Saskatchewan is managed through The Regulatory Modernization and Accountability Act.  This legislation mandates annual public reporting of regulatory modernization activities to be tabled at the end of every fiscal year.

The aim is to achieve better regulation with efficient compliance and maintain regulatory integrity, without any compromise to the environment, public safety or worker protection measures"
More information on the 2018 Red Tape Awareness Week activities is available at www.cfib-fcei.ca.

New Program:

The Canadian Red Cross Friendly Phone Link Program aims to provide socially isolated seniors living in our community with daily phone checks to ensure safety and well being. They hope that by providing participants with phone checks in the morning and evening, their safety will be ensured. Should a call go unanswered, an emergency procedure is in place to ensure that participants get the assistance they need in case of an accident. They hope that by providing regular home or phone visits, the seniors within their program will be able to stay in their homes and communities longer because of reduced feelings of isolation and improved health and safety.

We can help by getting the word out about the program so they can find isolated seniors who could benefit from this program. Watch for posters, postcards and bookmarks and for more information contact the volunteer committee at 1-306-515-3822.

911 Tips for the New Year - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday January 11th, 2018 8:35 am

This week we focus on: 911 Tips for the New Year

Released on January 4, 2018

"If you unwrapped a new smart phone recently on Christmas Day, Sask911 reminds you to do your part to protect the integrity of the 911 system by making sure you understand how your high-tech gift accesses emergency services.

“Smart phones are great tools that make our lives easier, but they also have functions that need to be used properly,” Saskatchewan’s Emergency Management and Fire Safety Commissioner Duane McKay said.  “Everyone can do their part to ensure 911 operators and emergency service dispatchers are available to serve those in need.”

For example, iPhones with newer operating systems can have their lock button clicked five times to have the option to swipe SOS.  After swiping SOS, the smart phone dials 911.  However, this function does not ping your location to Sask911.

“Sask911 has received some calls from people testing the feature, which ties up valuable resources,” McKay said.  “We want to be proactive and remind people to please call 911 only when there’s a real emergency.  If you do accidently dial 911 for whatever reason, please stay on the line so staff can verify quickly that there isn’t a real emergency.”

Smart phone users should also ensure their phones are locked when carrying them in a purse, pocket or bag to prevent accidental 911 calls.

From January to November of last year, Sask911 operators took 330,281 calls.  Of those, 58 per cent or 190,296 were from a cell phone, and 12 per cent or 40,046 were abandoned – meaning a caller hung up after dialing.

Other tips to help prevent accidental 911 calls:
  • Manually dialing 911 instead of preprogramming the number in your phone; and
  • Teaching your children the importance of 911 and when it should and should not be used.
General 911 tips:
  • When calling, say where you are and identify which emergency services you require, such as police, fire or ambulance.
  • Try to remain calm and be able to provide additional information, if requested by an operator.
  • Don’t hang up until an operator advises you to do so"
