Canadian Cancer Relay for life Launch
Friday April 1st,
2005
11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Recreation Centre
319 Main Street, Preeceville
The
Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life is happening on Friday June 3rd
and Saturday June 4th, 2005 at the Preeceville Sports grounds
1
km south of town.
Funds
raised at the event support the Society’s mission to eradicate cancer and
enhance the quality of life of people living with cancer.
The
first time event for Preeceville and District will be a celebration of
survival, a tribute to the lives of loved ones, a night of fun, friendship and
fundraising to beat cancer. It will be a 10-person team event in an overnight,
none competitive relay, taking turns walking, running or strolling around the
track. It is overnight because Cancer never sleeps.
It’s
$10.00 to join a team and each member is then asked to raise $100.00 in
pledges.
Cancer
survivors are invited to walk the first lap called the “ Survivors Victory
Lap”. There is a luminary ceremony at dusk (10:30pm) The luminaries are candles
that are placed in special bags weighed down with sand and line the track. Each
luminary bears the name of loved one who is a survivor, is fighting cancer or
has lost his or her life to the disease. The luminaries are on sale here and in
most other communities, Hudson Bay to Invermay, Porcupine Plain and Wadena to
Norquay and Kamsack.
At
this family event there will be entertainment all night in a no tobacco or
alcohol environment. The Cancer Smart Shop, a focal point for activities will
be fun and educational. A survivor’s tent will be set up for rest, relaxation
and visiting.
