This week we focus on: What to Know When Returning a Gift

"Many retailers have a return and/or exchange policy. Saskatchewan retailers are generally not required by law to have one, but many offer the service. Retailers can set the terms and limitations of a return policy, but if a policy is brought to the consumer’s attention at or before the time of purchase, retailers are obliged to honor it.

If a return/exchange notice is not posted anywhere, ask the retailer if there is a policy. Retailers can write the policy on your receipt and sign and date it at the time of purchase if it is not publicly posted. Do not forget to keep the receipt as proof of purchase.

Consumers also have a number of rights and protections under the law.

Rights and protections:

Retailers are required to take returns/exchanges on goods that fail to meet the warranties under The Consumer Protection and Business Practices Act (the Act). The warranties are designed to protect consumers by setting minimum expectations for goods and services. Some examples of the warranties that the Act requires include that the item works properly, that there are no liens (debts) attached to the item, and that the item is free from defects and hidden damage.

Shopping online:

Items sold online must match the description in the online listing. If the item does not match the description posted, it may be returned.

Retailers:

It is a good practice to post a return policy in a prominent location in the store or on receipts. Retailers are also encouraged to bring return policies to the attention of consumers at the time of purchase. These steps will help reduce disputes relating to returns.

Contact the Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority:

If you are having problems with returning a purchase and the retailer is not honoring your rights and protections, contact them at consumerprotection@gov.sk.ca for more information or to file a formal complaint."

"Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) protects consumer and public interests and supports economic well-being through responsive marketplace regulation. They protect Saskatchewan consumers by regulating financial products and service providers in an effective, efficient and balanced manner."

This week we focus on: 124,000 speeding convictions in one year?

"Whoa! Saskatchewan had more than 124,000 speeding convictions in ONE YEAR?"
Apr 2, 2018
April’s Traffic Safety Spotlight reminds drivers to #SlowDown before fines go up May 1
Whoa.
"In 2016, there were more than 124,000 convictions related to speeding in Saskatchewan. In a province with just over 800,000 licensed drivers, that's about one speeding ticket for every 6.5 drivers.
You’re probably thinking to yourself, “Whoa, that sounds like a lot of speeding tickets.”
We agree. Excessive speed is one of the leading factors in traffic-related deaths and injuries. In 2016, 22 people died in speed-related crashes on Saskatchewan roads. Another 579 were injured. That’s why SGI and police across Saskatchewan have made speeding and aggressive driving the focus of April’s Traffic Safety Spotlight. And, with speeding fines set to go up on May 1, it’s the perfect time to remind drivers to #SlowDown.
“Posted speed limits are not suggestions; they tell you how fast you’re legally allowed to drive,” said Penny McCune, COO of the Auto Fund. “The best way to avoid a ticket? Don’t speed. And remember that those speed limits are for ideal conditions, which is not something we experience every day of the year in Saskatchewan.”
Right now, exceeding the speed limit by 20 km/h on a regular street or highway triggers a total fine of $130, including the Victims of Crime surcharge and km/h charges. In a school zone, 20 km/h over the limit costs you $230. If you speed past workers in a 60 km/h orange zone, you’ll shell out $330 for going 80, and $530 for going 100!
And, as of May 1, those tickets will cost you even more. The base fine on all speeding tickets will increase by $30 and the km/h charge for travelling in excess of the posted speed will double."
Whoa, that isn’t cheap. So save your cash and #SlowDown.
