Older Wiser Driver Guide - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday March 23rd, 2017 8:35 am

Working Draft for:

Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday March 23rd, 2017 8:35 am

With GX94's Craig Wallebeck > see him @ http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-Wallebeck

This week we focus on: Older Wiser Driver Guide

"The Older Wiser Driver Guide can help you assess your driving practices and provides suggestions you can use to make your driving safer. Making just a few small adjustments, such as avoiding driving at night, during peak traffic hours or in bad weather, can help you stay on the road safely for a long time to come"

Older Wiser Driver Guide (pdf, 433 kb)

Think about what tasks you do every time you get behind the wheel of a car. You must

coordinate the actions of your hands, feet, eyes, ears and body movements. At the same

time, you must decide how to react to what you see, hear and feel in relation to other cars

and drivers, traffic signs and signals, conditions of the highway and the performance of

 your car.

These decisions are usually made close to other vehicles and must be converted quickly

into action – brake, steer, accelerate or a combination of all – to maintain or adjust your

position in traffic. And these decisions must be made frequently. About 20 major decisions are

needed for each kilometre driven; drivers frequently have less than one half second to

act to avoid a collision.

The record of older drivers is good when you consider the number of collisions per driver,

but when you consider the number of collisions per kilometre driven, their record is

surprisingly bad. Older drivers have fewer collisions because they drive less and at less

dangerous times. But when they are in a collision, it can be very serious because

injuries that are seen as moderate to severe for a younger person can be fatal for an older

person.

After testing yourself you can look at your rating”

GO! You are aware of what is important for safe driving and are

practising what you know. See the “Suggestions for improvement”

in the following section of this booklet to learn how to become an

 even safer driver.

CAUTION! You are engaging in some practices that need

improvement to ensure safety. Look to the “Suggestions for

improvement” section to see how you might improve driving.

STOP! You are engaging in too many unsafe driving practices.

You are a potential or actual hazard to yourself and others. Examine

the areas where you checked squares or triangles. Read the

“Suggestions for improvement” section for ways to correct these

 problem areas.

Learning from your results

One of the purposes of the self-rating form is to help you become, if you are not already, an

“activated driver.” An activated driver is someone who assumes responsibility for his or her

own driving skills and who self examines and compares his or her ability with the require -

ments for safe driving. Through knowledge and self awareness, you will understand what a

safe driver is and will assume the responsibility to be a safe driver. On the other hand, you may

decide that your driving poses a risk and decide to give up your driver’s licence and

seek other forms of transportation.

The questionnaire you have just completed has helped you to identify those areas where your

physical and decision-making abilities call for a change in your driving habits and skills. This

section of the booklet offers suggestions to improve each driving skill highlighted in the

ques tionnaire. Be sure to focus on those sections that correspond to the problem areas

identified by the questionnaire."

The Assiniboine Watershed - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday March 16th, 2017 8:35 am

Working Draft for:

Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday March 16th, 2017 8:35 am

With GX94's Craig Wallebeck > see him @ http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-Wallebeck

This week we focus on: The Assiniboine Watershed

"The Assiniboine Watershed Stewardship Association (AWSA) is an independent, non-profit organization that is dedicated to protecting and enhancing source water in the Assiniboine River Watershed. Our VISION is citizens and communities of the Assiniboine River Watershed working together to protect the source waters of the Assiniboine River; its tributaries and aquifers within the watershed. Our MISSION is to have healthy source waters throughout the Assiniboine River Watershed"

"We work closely with all levels of government, as well as other stewardship groups and private agencies, to complete the key actions contained in our two Source Water Protection Plans. The Assiniboine River Watershed is an exceptional area with its own unique source water concerns. The Source Water Protection Plans target the highest ranking risks that are threatening the water supplies. The AWSA provides local solutions to local problems, while also providing a place people can call for help with their own water-related issues. Through the actions of the association, we strive to ensure that every person in the Assiniboine River Watershed has a safe, reliable supply of drinking water, now and into the future"

4. Install faucet aerators.

5. Take shorter showers and wash hands using only as much water flow as you really need.

6. Never run the dishwasher or washing machine without a full load.

7. Turn off the taps while brushing your teeth.

8. Ensure your sprinklers only spray on the areas that need water.

9. Take your car to a car wash that recycles the water.

10. Use a broom to clean your driveway.

Time to remove your Ice Fishing Shelters - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday March 9th, 2017 8:35 am

Working Draft for:

Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday March 9th, 2017 8:35 am

With GX94's Craig Wallebeck > see him @ http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-Wallebeck

This week we focus on: Time to remove your Ice Fishing Shelters

Released on March 8, 2017

"With the ice fishing season winding down, all fishing shelters south of Highway 16 must be removed by March 15 and shelters in areas north of Highway 16 must be removed by March 31.
Ice fishing shelters are abandoned on the ice each year. Shelters not removed pose a danger to boaters, water-skiers and others enjoying our lakes. Pieces wash up on shore and can also cause environmental hazards.

If shelters are not removed, owners may be prosecuted, and the structure and contents may be removed and confiscated.

Litter must also be removed when ice shelters are taken off the ice and structures must be moved to a location above the high water mark. Ice fishing shelters must have the owner’s complete name, address and phone number on the outside in legible letters that are at least 2.5 cm high.

Ice fishing season closes on March 31 in southern and central Saskatchewan and on April 15 in the north. Information about fishing in the province can be found in the Saskatchewan Anglers’ Guide and online at www.saskatchwan.ca/fishing.Anyone travelling on the ice should take extreme caution. Slush indicates that ice is eroding from above and below at an advanced rate and changing temperatures can cause thermal cracks and pressure ridges, which are indicators of unsafe conditions.

To report a fisheries, wildlife, environmental or forestry violation, contact your nearest Ministry of Environment Office or call the province's Turn In Poachers (TIP) line at 1-800-667-7561 or #5555 from any SaskTel cell phone, or report a violation online at www.saskatchewan.ca/tip. You may be eligible for cash rewards from the SaskTip Reward Program. Callers can remain anonymous"

"Sturgis Kinsmen gearing up for 37th annual Mini-Miracle
PREECEVILLE PROGRESS

FEBRUARY 24, 2017 12:58 PM
The Sturgis Kinsmen and Kinettes are preparing their 37th annual Mini-Miracle and organizers have said they have a full stage of talent lined up.

The annual Mini-Miracle is scheduled for March 2 at the Sturgis Composite High School, said Eugene Boychuk, Kinsmen co-chair.

Sturgis Kinsmen Mini-Miracle has raised $826,561 over the past 36 years, Boychuk said. “Our goal this year is to raise another $30,000.”

“People can call their pledges into the Sturgis Composite High School or give their donations to participants along the road through the hospital bed push or mini marathon events,” he said.

The Preeceville Hospital is once again gearing up towards its annual bed push on March 3. The bed push will leave approximately at 2 p.m. from the hospital and make its way downtown and along the highway to Sturgis. The proceeds will be presented at the Sturgis Kinsmen and Kinettes annual mini-Telemiracle, which will be  broadcasted live on CJGX-94 radio station on March 3.

The Sturgis Kinsmen will also be collecting donations along their marathon run from Canora to Sturgis on that same day, he said. The marathon of Sturgis Composite High School students, SRC members and Kinsmen members will leave Canora approximately at 11 a.m. and make their way back to Sturgis.

“The Sturgis Kinsmen and Kinettes are in their 37th  year of the mini-Telemiracle,” said Daniel Wasylenchuk, co-chairman of Mini-Miracle. Eugene Boychuk is the other co-chairman.

“Amy McDade, the GX-94 star search winner, is scheduled to perform along with a whole slate of local talent.  James Betts and Shayla Ulmer will be joining us in Sturgis from the list of entertainers scheduled to perform at Telemiracle,” he said.

Telemiracle Teddy is scheduled to make his rounds to the schools in the area the week prior.

Sturgis Kinsmen and Kinettes will be travelling to Saskatoon to work some shifts at Telemiracle and will be making their own on-air presentation from what is raised during the Mini-Telemiracle on Sunday between 12 p.m. and 2 p.m.

The annual Telemiracle broadcast will be from TCU Place in Saskatoon on March 4 and 5"

Kinsmen Foundation
"When the Kinsmen Foundation was established in 1971, it granted funds raised by local Kinsmen and Kinette clubs. It was soon recognized that the requests for assistance far exceeded the available funds. To meet the need, planning started in 1976 for a province-wide telethon as a major fund raiser. Telemiracle 1 was staged in Saskatoon in February 1977 and carried on a network of six Saskatchewan television stations featuring provincial and national performers.

Our Kinsmen and Kinette Volunteers continue to play a lead organizational role in staging Telemiracle - from answering phones to counting donations to constructing the stage. The broadcast elements of the production are run by volunteers from our partners at CTV. In all, 1000 people come together for the weekend to bring you Saskatchewan’s telethon profiling some of the people funded, demonstrating that it is the ability of individuals that is important, and providing 20 hours of fun and entertainment.
Once Telemiracle has come to a close and the donations and pledges are finalized, the funds are turned over to the Kinsmen Foundation for distribution by its volunteer Board of Directors to special needs equipment and access to medical assistance by individuals, care homes, and health foundations across our province to improve quality of life and independence.
For individuals, innovations like ceiling track systems, portable lifts and ramps, funded by the Kinsmen Foundation, are making it possible for people to live at home and still receive the care they need. And with equipment like specialized wheelchairs, electric scooters, vehicle conversions and communications devices, people are achieving a level of independence they didn’t think possible.

When people cannot access the level of care they need at home, they must often travel to health care facilities in other parts of the province or country. And while the medical procedures are covered by health care, the patients and their families must pay for their own travel, meals and accommodations. By easing the financial strain, the Kinsmen Foundation allows families to focus on what only they can provide – love and care.

Funding groups that directly work with people with special needs is also an important focus the Kinsmen Foundation. Across our province, loving care homes have been established with a family atmosphere to provide comfort and care to people with special needs. Kinsmen Foundation provides funding for things like ceiling track systems, specialized tubs, lifts, specialty beds and personal care equipment to make those homes even better suited to provide quality care.

A third area of Kinsmen Foundation funding is focused on institutions and health foundations to purchase specialized, new, or innovative equipment to improve health care. Over the years, donations of this type have been provided in every corner of the province"
