150th anniversary of Confederation - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday March 24th, 2016 8:35 am

Working Draft for:
Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday March 24th, 2016 8:35 am

With GX94's Craig Wallebeck > see him @
http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-wallebeck
This week we focus on: the 150th anniversary of Confederation

"According to Minister Joly, the 150th anniversary of Confederation gives the Government of Canada an opportunity to engage and inspire Canadians in their communities. It is also a time to come together to celebrate our shared values, our achievements, our majestic environment and our place in the world.

The vision seeks to bring people together and inspire them. It will feature themes focusing on diversity and inclusion, reconciliation from nation to nation with Indigenous people, youth and the environment.

Canadians throughout the country, as well as those living abroad, will proudly take part in the celebrations marking the 150thanniversary of Confederation. This is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate all that it means to be Canadian. The Government of Canada is proud to be part of this anniversary of national and historic importance"

 It plans to:

· promote and celebrate our Canadian identity; our ethnic, linguistic, cultural and regional diversity; and our rich history and heritage;

· encourage Canadians to invest in our country’s future by bringing about significant changes and leaving a lasting legacy for coming generations;

· create opportunities for Canadians to participate and celebrate together our shared values, our Canadian identity, our achievements, our majestic environment and our place in the world; and

· maximize government investments and generate economic benefits for the country’s communities.

The main themes of the Government of Canada’s vision for the 150th anniversary of Confederation are:

· Diversity and inclusion – We want to continue building a welcoming Canada where there is a place for everyone, a Canada where everyone can reach his or her full potential.

· Reconciliation from nation to nation with Indigenous people – We want to support reconciliation efforts with Indigenous people and make use of the 150th anniversary to reaffirm our intent to implement the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

· Youth – We want to continue to engage young people and give them the means to contribute to our society, because they are the ones who will shape tomorrow’s Canada.

· Environment – We want to be the custodians of our environment, because it is a source of our country’s wealth and pride. We want to bring Canadians closer to nature in order to strengthen their environmental awareness.

The Canada 150 Fund was established in April 2015. The goal of the Canada 150 Fund is to create opportunities for Canadians to participate in local, regional, and national celebrations that contribute to building a sense of pride and attachment to Canada. It has an overall budget of $210 million.

As well, Federal departments and agencies will prepare activities to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation under their own programs — such as issuing commemorative coins or postage stamps, or other activities to be announced in the coming months.

In 2017, Canadians will also commemorate several other important events that will add to the celebration of the 150th anniversary of Confederation. These include the centennial of the battles of Vimy Ridge and Passchendaele; the 125th anniversary of the Stanley Cup; the centennial of the National Hockey League; the 75th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid; and the 50th anniversary of the Canada Games.

The Creation of Canada Day and how it relates to Canada Day 2017

Canada Day 2017

"Canadians across the country and around the world show their pride in their history, culture and achievements. It’s been a day of celebration, where many festivities are held across the country, since 1868.

Have you ever wondered about the origins of Canada Day? Here’s the history, courtesy of the Government of Canada:

The Creation of Canada Day

July 1, 1867: The British North America Act (today known as the Constitution Act, 1867) created Canada.

June 20, 1868: Governor General Lord Monck signs a proclamation that requests all Her Majesty’s subjects across Canada to celebrate July 1.

1879: A federal law makes July 1 a statutory holiday as the “anniversary of Confederation,” which is later called “Dominion Day.”

October 27, 1982: July 1, “Dominion Day” officially becomes Canada Day.

The Celebrations Start

July 1, 1917: The 50th anniversary of Confederation. The Parliament buildings, under construction, are dedicated to the Fathers of Confederation and to the courage of Canadians who fought in Europe during the First World War.

July 1, 1927: The 60th anniversary of Confederation. The Peace Tower Carillon is inaugurated. The Governor General at the time, Viscount Willingdon, lays the cornerstone of the Confederation Building on Wellington Street.

From 1958 to 1968: The government organizes celebrations for Canada’s national holiday every year. The Secretary of State of Canada is responsible for coordinating these activities. A typical format includes a flag ceremony in the afternoon on the lawns of Parliament Hill and a sunset ceremony in the evenings, followed by a concert of military music and fireworks.

July 1, 1967: The 100th anniversary of Confederation. Parliament Hill is the backdrop for a high-profile ceremony, which includes the participation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

From 1968 to 1979 (with the exception of 1976): A large multicultural celebration is presented on Parliament Hill. This concert is broadcast on television across the country. The main celebrations (called “Festival Canada”) are held in the National Capital Region throughout the month of July. These celebrations include many cultural, artistic and sport activities and involve the participation of various municipalities and volunteer associations.

From 1980 to 1983: A new format is developed. In addition to the festivities on Parliament Hill, the national committee (the group tasked by the federal government to plan the festivities for Canada’s national holiday) starts to encourage and financially support the establishment of local celebrations across Canada. Start-up funding is provided to support popular activities and performances organized by volunteer groups in hundreds of communities. Interested organizations can make a request to the Celebrate Canada program.

1981: Fireworks light up the sky in 15 major Canadian cities, a tradition that continues today.

1984: The National Capital Commission (NCC) is given the mandate to organize Canada Day festivities in the capital.

2010: Festivities on Parliament Hill receive a royal treatment when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh join the festivities to celebrate Canada’s 143rd anniversary.

2011: Their Royal Highnesses Prince William and Catherine, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, participate in Canada Day festivities on Parliament Hill on the occasion of Canada’s 144th anniversary.

2014: Canadian Heritage organizes the 147th Canada Day celebrations. As we approach Canada’s 150th anniversary in 2017, the government has given the Department the mandate to organize Canada Day festivities in the capital"

Ombudsman Saskatchewan now has jurisdiction over municipal entities - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday March 3rd, 2016 8:35 am

Working Draft for:
Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday March 3rd, 2016 8:35 am

With GX94's Craig Wallebeck > see him @
http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-wallebeck
This week we focus on: Ombudsman Saskatchewan now has jurisdiction over municipal entities.
 An ombudsman:
  • takes complaints about a specific organization or group of organizations.
  • may investigate, mediate or provide other such services to help resolve complaints.
  • is neutral and looks at the complaint from all sides
Ombudsman Saskatchewan is an independent office, headed by the provincial Ombudsman. The Legislative Assembly appoints the Ombudsman. As a result, the office is separate from the government of the day and free to come to its own conclusions.
Just as the provincial Auditor holds the government accountable in matters of money, the Ombudsman holds the government accountable in matters of fairness.
Ombudsman Saskatchewan promotes fairness by:
  • taking complaints about unfairness in government services.
  • educating government about fair practices.
  • making the general public aware of our services.

Vision

Our vision is that government is always accountable, acts with integrity, and treats people fairly.

Mission

Our mission is to promote and protect fairness and integrity in the design and delivery of government services.

Values

We will demonstrate in our work and workplace:
fairness, integrity and accountability
independence and impartiality
confidentiality
respect
competence and consistency

Goals
