Community Response to Severe Allergic Reactions - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday Sept 24th, 2015 8:35 am

Working Draft for:

http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-wallebeck
This week we focus on: Community Response to Severe Allergic Reactions

Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction and has the potential to cause death. Epinephrine is the first line of treatment to respond to severe reactions and the placement of auto injectors that talk can be correlated with the placement of automated external defibrillators in public settings. The wall mounted  cabinets have two auto injectors of the medicine, one for a child and one for an adult.

http://www.allerject.ca/en/back-to-school-2015

"A New Brunswick Community is taking a lead in helping to save the lives of those with severe allergies.
The Town of Sussex is putting epinephrine auto-injectors into numerous locations including schools and businesses. This makes them easily accessible in the case of a severe allergic reaction.
Nurse Practitioner Kelly Dunfield says they are the first community in Canada to do this.
She says, "We are still rolling this project out, but in the Sussex and area, they have the auto-injectors at 24 sites and in various schools."
The epinephrine auto-injectors are used to treat life threatening allergic reactions.
Dunfield says their hope is to encourage other communities to do the same"

"A nurse practitioner hopes to prevent needless deaths from severe allergic reactions by installing publicly accessible auto injectors of epinephrine in prominent locations in Sussex, N.B.Kelly Dunfield, 51, and her son Robert Dunfield, a 22-year-old medical student, have already arranged for the installation of 30 cabinets with two auto injectors of the medicine — one for a child and one for an adult — in 24 locations ranging from golf courses to fire stations. She says the program was inspired by the increasing use of publicly accessible defibrillators, which have saved the lives of people who suffer sudden heart attacks" - See more at: http://www.coastreporter.net/nurse-sets-up-easy-access-auto-injectors-to-help-with-severe-allergic-reactions-1.2048083#sthash.423eXteF.dpuf

This week we focus on: Making a emergency plan

"It will take you about 20 minutes to make a family emergency plan online. You can then print it out. Before starting, you will need to think about:
  • Safe exits from home and neighbourhood
  • Meeting places to reunite with family or roommates
  • Designated person to pick up children should you be unavailable
  • Contact persons close-by and out-of-town
  • Health and insurance information
  • Places for your pet to stay
  • Risks in your region
  • Location of your fire extinguisher, water valve, electrical panel, gas valve and floor drain "
Start Now!

Get Prepared:   http://www.getprepared.gc.ca/index-eng.aspx

"You may have some of these basic emergency kit items already, such as a flashlight, battery-operated radio, food, water and blankets. The key is to make sure they are organized, easy to find and easy to carry (in a suitcase with wheels or in a backpack) in case you need to evacuate your home. Whatever you do, don't wait for a disaster to happen"

Check off the items for your 72-hour emergency kit as you accumulate them.

This week we focus on: Saskatchewan Cemeteries Project

One of the many questions I get from time to time is about our cemetery. A big thanks to the people behind this project for all the hard work. We can all now easily do the research before heading out for a visit. So for Preeceville you have a choice of the town cemetery or one of six cemeteries in the R.M. of Preeceville. Many of the headstones have photo's that you can look at. Under the obituraries link you can also see the writeup at the time of death if it is listed to date.
