Working Draft for:

Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday May 25th, 2017 8:35 am

With GX94's Craig Wallebeck > see him @ http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-Wallebeck

This week we focus on:  Salute to Preeceville - 606 Air Cadets - 606 Harvard Squadron

"The Cadet Program is one of the largest federally sponsored youth programs in Canada that includes:
  • The Royal Canadian Sea Cadets;
  • The Royal Canadian Army Cadets; and
  • The Royal Canadian Air Cadets.
It is a national program for young Canadians aged 12 to 18 who are interested in participating in a variety of fun, challenging and rewarding activities while learning about the Sea , Army and Air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces.
Cadets are encouraged to become active, responsible members of their communities. They make valuable contributions to Canadian society on a daily basis in terms of environmental, citizenship and community activities.
Cadets also learn valuable life and work skills such as teamwork, leadership and citizenship"

"Cadets are not members of the Canadian Armed Forces, nor are they expected to join the military. While they are introduced to Sea, Army and/or Air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces and certain traditions, they are also introduced to many other respectable career choices that are available to them.
Through the Cadet Program, the Government of Canada is investing in today’s youth and Canada’s future.
The Cadet Program is community-based. The program succeeds through strong community support and involvement. Cadets in turn make valuable contributions to their communities"

"Air Cadets learn the principles of aviation, while some learn to become glider pilots, pilots of engine-propelled aircraft or both"

"Royal Canadian Air Cadets participate in a variety of fun and challenging activities. There is something for everyone – no matter what their personal interests may be. The outdoor enthusiast will appreciate learning survival skills for flight crew. The athlete will appreciate physical education and recreation, including a variety of sporting activities like biathlon and Olympic-style marksmanship. The artists will find their niche in the music program.
The curious will appreciate the hands-on activities such as building model aircraft. The scholarly will appreciate an introduction to the various tools and technologies linked to aviation. The dreamers will appreciate the evolution of technology and the advancements of the aerospace era, including the importance of Canadian participation.
Select top senior cadets may even earn the chance to represent Canada on the world stage by participating in an international exchange.
Most importantly, Air Cadets aids in developing knowledge of Canadian history and democracy. The cadet program focuses on social development, decision-making and leadership. As cadets acquire skills and knowledge, they pass it along to younger cadets.
Every cadet will have the chance to participate in flight activities, and some top senior cadets may even earn a scholarship to obtain their private pilot’s licence. Whether earning a glider pilot licence or private pilot licence, these cadets wear their wings with a pride rarely found in today’s youth"

Education Credits for Cadets: in Saskatchewan
"Formal process exists for individual student (Grades 10,11,12) to apply once during their high school career for one (1) “Special Educational credit (SEC).” This marked credit is put towards the student’s high school diploma in terms of the number of credits and grade point average. In September, students must apply to the school or school board to receive permission to take a SEC course"

On November 19th, 1940 – the Order-in-Council PC 6647 was signed standing up a Junior Air Cadet Corps for boys 12-14 and a Senior Air Cadet Corps for those 15-18 years of age to support the efforts of the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. Watch for Blue Lights & slow to 60 K - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday May 18th, 2017 8:35 am

Working Draft for:

Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday May 18th, 2017 8:35 am

With GX94's Craig Wallebeck > see him @ http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-Wallebeck

This week we focus on: Watch for Blue Lights & slow to 60 K

"The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed The Traffic Safety (Tow Trucks) Amendment Act, 2017 to permit blue lights to be used in conjunction with amber lights on tow trucks and other vehicles providing roadside assistance. Adding blue lights will increase visibility from further distances on highways.  The law goes into effect immediately.

”Operators of tow trucks and roadside assistance vehicles put their lives on the line to help stranded motorists,” Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) Joe Hargrave said.  “Adding blue lights to these vehicles will alert motorists sooner, providing them ample time to slow to 60 while passing.  It will help make highways safer for all road users, and help our roadside responders make it home safely.”

A public safety awareness campaign will begin on the long weekend, educating drivers about the importance of slowing to 60 kilometres per hour when they see flashing lights on the side of the road, regardless of color – whether blue, red or amber.  SGI also reminds drivers that exceeding the limit by even 10 km/h when passing these vehicles with lights engaged will cost a driver $210, including fines and surcharges"

Visit SGI’s website at
www.sgi.sk.ca to learn more about blue lights and laws regarding #SlowTo60.

Emergency Preparedness Week - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday May 11th, 2017 8:35 am

Working Draft for:

Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday May 11th, 2017 8:35 am

With GX94's Craig Wallebeck > see him @ http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-Wallebeck

This week we focus on: Emergency Preparedness Week

Plan. Prepare. Be aware. The Twenty-first Annual Emergency Preparedness Week May 7 to 13

"It’s late at night when an emergency responder knocks on your door.  There was a flash flood and your community is being evacuated.  Are you ready?  What if you are advised to shelter in place?  Do you have everything you will need to take care of yourself for a minimum of 72 hours, without water or power?

“Emergencies can strike at any moment, so we’re encouraging residents to plan ahead,” Government Relations Minister Donna Harpauer said.  “Individual preparedness goes a long way to help people cope – both during and after a disaster.”

Recent trends of extreme weather have led to an increase in emergency situations such as wildfires and flooding.  Over the last two years, approximately 14,000 Saskatchewan residents were evacuated from their homes.  Others needed to shelter in place.  Many residents were also affected by tornadoes, flash floods, water advisories and dangerous animal sightings.

To get prepared for any emergency, the Government of Saskatchewan encourages residents to:

Make an evacuation plan
If you were evacuated, would you remember to take your health card, identification and prescription medication?  Consider what you would need to take with you in an evacuation.  If you are evacuated, it is a good idea to tell your loved ones where you are going so they know you are safe.

Your emergency preparedness kit should have everything you and your family would need for at least 72 hours after an emergency.  Having an emergency preparedness kit on hand means you will be better equipped to care for yourself and your family – no matter what happens.

Your kit should include:

  • water;
  • non-perishable foods;
  • a flashlight;
  • batteries;
  • a radio;
  • a first aid kit;
  • prescription medications;
  • cash, and
  • copies of your family’s health cards and other identification.
For more information about preparing a 72 hour kit, visit the Government of Canada’s “Get Prepared” website at www.getprepared.gc.ca.

Check your alarms
Your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm could save your life.  Check that your alarms are installed and working properly.

Download SaskAlert
SaskAlert is Saskatchewan’s emergency alerting system that provides real-time information on emergencies as they occur so you will be able to take action to protect yourself, your family and your property.  Visit www.SaskAlert.ca or download the SaskAlert app on your android or iOS device today.

International Day of Older Persons - Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday May 4th, 2017 8:35 am

Working Draft for:

Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday May 4th, 2017 8:35 am

With GX94's Craig Wallebeck > see him @ http://www.gx94radio.com/craig-Wallebeck

This week we focus on: International Day of Older Persons

"The United Nations International Day of Older Persons (UNIDOP)  takes a stand against ageism by drawing attention to and challenging negative stereotypes and misconceptions about older persons and ageing.
Ageism is a widely prevalent and prejudicial attitude that stems from the assumption that age discrimination, and sometimes neglect and abuse of older persons is a social norm and therefore, acceptable. It is a reality in some form in all societies, and finds expression in individuals’ attitudes, institutional and policy practices, as well as media representation that devalue and exclude older persons. In 2014, Governments around the world adopted a resolution at the Economic and Social Council that recognized ageism as “the common source of, the justification for and the driving force behind age discrimination.”
Such discrimination shapes how older persons are treated and perceived by their societies, including in medical settings and workplaces, creating environments that limit older persons’ potential and impact their health and well-being. The failure to tackle ageism undermines older persons’ rights and hinders their contributions to social, economic, cultural and political life"

Independence, participation, care, self fulfillment and dignity.

Be it resolved that October 1st each year would be the International Day of Older Persons in Preeceville.

"Our strength as a community is how we provide for our seniors and how we teach our youth. This, balanced with quality of life for the rest of our population, is what Preeceville and area is all about. We are proud to be a community in Saskatchewan"

    "New census data released shows that Saskatchewan’s population is younger than the Canadian average.

    “Saskatchewan’s future has never been brighter as shown in today’s release of census data indicating that we have one of the youngest populations in Canada,” Economy Minister Jeremy Harrison said.  “Having one of the youngest populations in Canada shows that Saskatchewan continues to be a great place to live, work, do business and to raise a family, attracting tens of thousands of new residents from across Canada and around the world over the past decade.”

    Saskatchewan has more children 14 years of age and younger than seniors 65 years of age and older, compared to Canada where the opposite is true – more seniors than young people.

    Saskatchewan has the highest proportion of young people, aged 14 and below, among provinces and also had the highest growth in that age group between 2011 and 2016, growing from 19.1 per cent to 19.6 per cent.

    Saskatchewan has the second lowest proportion of seniors among provinces, aged 65 and older, behind Alberta; and the lowest growth in seniors between 2011 and 2016, increasing from 14.9 per cent to 15.5 per cent.

    Saskatchewan has the second lowest average age among provinces, behind Alberta; and had the lowest increase in average age in Canada from 39.0 in 2011 to 39.1 in 2016.  The Canadian average age increased from 40.1 to 41.0"

    "Our strength as a community is how we provide for our seniors and how we teach our youth. This, balanced with quality of life for the rest of our population, is what Preeceville and area is all about. We are proud to be a community in Saskatchewan"

    - The prairie crocus (Anemone patens), is the first plant to bloom on the prairie each year. The true harbinger of spring, its mauve petals dot the still drab prairie landscape, often before the last winter have melted. By blooming so early, the crocus assures itself of the complete attention of available pollinators - small bees and other insects. Its seeds can then ripen by early June and if moisture is available they will germinate right away. If the prairie is too dry the seeds will go dormant, then germinate the following spring. The price for this early flowering strategy is occasional failure of the seed crop. Severe frosts (-5 to -10C) during flowering can limit seed production"
