Test Your Survival Skills In Saskatchewan Provincial Parks

Released on July 24, 2019

“For those travelling to a provincial park this summer, participation in the Saskatchewan Survival Series is a must – a fun and educational program designed to help visitors explore parks and learn survival skills.

“Parks are a popular destination for Saskatchewan residents and visitors to our province,” Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Gene Makowsky said.  “This fun program offers visitors, especially new visitors, the opportunity to learn about our parks while getting familiar with safety and survival techniques.”

There are six unique modules to explore in the Survival Series, including:

  • Key survival techniques;
  • Fire safety and fire starting techniques;
  • Navigating, using compasses, maps and GPS units;
  • Animal awareness and safety;
  • Building emergency shelters; and
  • Identifying plants growing in the parks and if they are edible or could be used for traditional medicine.

This is the first year the Survival Series has been offered in Saskatchewan Provincial Parks and it will run until the end of August.  Interested participants can visit www.saskparks.com to find when the Survival Series programs are taking place and in which parks.

This week we focus on: Beach Water Quality

Before You Hit The Beach, Know The Water Quality

Released on July 11, 2019

“Saskatchewan residents are now able to check out the water quality at their local beaches before making the trek to the shore.  Starting this week, the Ministry of Health will begin publicly posting the results of the Healthy Beach Monitoring Program, which collects data to monitor and identify trends in water quality and beach safety.

“By having this information easily accessible, public beach goers can make themselves aware of potential water quality issues and stay safe this summer,” Zoonotic/Environmental Health Consultant Nicole White said. “This will help people make informed decisions about their in-water activities when visiting our lakes.  It’s important to note that even if poor water quality is reported at a specific location, people can still enjoy activities such as canoeing, sailing and boating.”

This year the program is monitoring 67 public swimming areas across the province - private beaches are not included in this report.  Water quality issues such as blue-green algae and poor water quality will be captured in the report and conditions will be designated as safe, caution or swimming advisory issued as below.

Reports will be posted at www.saskatchewan.ca/healthy-beaches on Mondays until September.

“It’s important to note that local closures can happen evenings or weekends and may not be immediately reflected in the report,” White said.  “Residents are always encouraged to follow notifications posted on the beach.”

Public Meeting July 11th, 2019 Preeceville Community Legion Hall 7:00 PM

Preeceville's Main Street with the Mayor Garth Harris for Thursday January 10th, 2019
(at the bottom of this page)

Public Meeting – July 11th, 2019 7:00 pm Preeceville Community Legion Hall

Mayor Garth Harris Presentation:

The Town of Preeceville has been working towards upgrades for the Wastewater Treatment Facility (Lagoon) for close to 10 years now, with preliminary designs, investigations and grant funding applications. Last fall we were notified that the Town was approved for funding for the Lagoon Project through the New Building Canada Fund. Through this program the Federal Government, the Provincial Government and the Town of Preeceville will each fund one third of the cost of this project. The total estimated eligible expenditures for this project are $5,194,500.00. The Federal Government will contribute $1,731,327.00, the Provincial Government will contribute $1,731,327.00 and the Town will contribute $1,731,846.00.

Over the past many years, the Town of Preeceville has gradually implemented minimal Water and Sewer rate increases to ensure enough revenue is being generated to cover increasing operational costs and to set funds aside for future infrastructure upgrades. The Town currently has $634,681.00 in reserves set aside to put toward our portion of the project costs and the remaining portion of just over $1 million will be funded through a long-term loan.

The Town intends to maintain and monitor our Water and Sewer rate increase schedule to ensure funding is available for future infrastructure projects. In the current rate increase schedule, the average residential user sees a yearly increase of $36.00 to their yearly total of water and sewer costs.

The Town is committed to sustaining our aging infrastructure. In addition to the Lagoon Project we are also working towards upgrading our Water Treatment Plant. The Town has also conducted studies, pilot projects and many grant funding applications to upgrade our water treatment process. The Water Treatment Plant will be the next large upgrade project we undergo for the utility system.

The new wastewater infrastructure will increase treatment capacity for future growth, improve the quality of the treated wastewater and will meet all Water Security Agency Regulations and Requirements. Town Council is very pleased to have been approved for funding for the Wastewater project and the Town would like to thank the Federal and Provincial Governments for contributing to our project. The Town would also like to take this opportunity to thank Colliers Project Leaders for assisting the Town in managing this large-scale project and the Town would like to thank the Engineers from MPE Engineering for their extensive work done on designing the best system for our community. The Town looks forward to seeing the construction starting.
