This week we focus on: Calling all teens – spread the word on safe driving and win

October 16 to 22 proclaimed National Teen Driver Safety Week
As a teen driver and a winner of last year’s National Teen Driver Safety Week contest, Maidstone’s Mackenzie Durocher knows the importance of making smart and safe decisions behind the wheel.

“Teens need to realize that they’re not the only ones affected by their unsafe driving, and more importantly, they need to realize that things do go wrong and it can happen to them,” said Durocher, 17. “As new drivers we’re all still learning, and having distractions like our phones, impairments like alcohol, or taking risks by speeding or not wearing a seatbelt – these all create a recipe for disaster.”

Organized by Parachute Canada, a national injury prevention organization, National Teen Driver Safety Week runs the week of October 16 to 22. The promotional week aims to help teens put the brakes on dangerous driving and encourages teens like Durocher to share the important message of teen driver safety.

In support of the week, SGI is holding a social media contest to promote teen road safety and help teens #GetHomeSafeSK. Between October 9 to 22, teens aged 15 to 19 can like SGI’s ad or post on either Facebook or Instagram and tag two friends for a chance to win one of six $250 VISA gift card prizes.

How does Durocher drive safe?

“I keep photographs of my loved ones stuck to the console of my car, and so do all of my friends,” said Durocher. “When I step into my car in a rush, ready to back out without my seatbelt, or when I feel impatient and consider speeding, a quick glance at my loved ones’ photos reminds me that safety is always more important than whether or not I’m five minutes late.”

In Durocher’s experience, teen drivers seem to have a sense of invincibility and tend to take more risks behind the wheel. The reality is, these risks can come with a lifetime of consequences. Teen drivers have high fatality, injury and collision rates. In 2015¹, 13 teens were killed and 592 were injured on Saskatchewan roads when a teen driver was behind the wheel.

“When I see how many young people die every year due to impaired and distracted driving, it makes me angry,” said Durocher. “As young people, and as young drivers, we have a responsibility to look out for each other, and ensure we’re making the best decisions we can when it comes to road safety.”
