This week we focus on:  606 Air Cadets - 606 Harvard Squadron "The Cadet Program is one of the largest federally sponsored youth programs in Canada that includes: The Royal Canadian Sea Cadets; The Royal Canadian Army Cadets; and The Royal Canadian Air Cadets. It is a national program for young Canadians aged 12 to 18 who are interested in participating in a variety of fun, challenging and rewarding activities while learning about the Sea , Army and Air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces. Cadets are encouraged to become active, responsible members of their communities. They make valuable contributions to Canadian society on a daily basis in terms of environmental, citizenship and community activities. Cadets also learn valuable life and work skills such as teamwork, leadership and citizenship" "Cadets are not members of the Canadian Armed Forces, nor are they expected to join the military. While they are introduced to Sea, Army and/or Air activities of the Canadian Armed Forces and certain traditions, they are also introduced to many other respectable career choices that are available to them. Through the Cadet Program, the Government of Canada is investing in today’s youth and Canada’s future. The Cadet Program is community-based. The program succeeds through strong community support and involvement. Cadets in turn make valuable contributions to their communities" "Air Cadets learn the principles of aviation, while some learn to become glider pilots, pilots of engine-propelled aircraft or both" "Royal Canadian Air Cadets participate in a variety of fun and challenging activities. There is something for everyone – no matter what their personal interests may be. The outdoor enthusiast will appreciate learning survival skills for flight crew. The athlete will appreciate physical education and recreation, including a variety of sporting activities like biathlon and Olympic-style marksmanship. The artists will find their niche in the music program. The curious will appreciate the hands-on activities such as building model aircraft. The scholarly will appreciate an introduction to the various tools and technologies linked to aviation. The dreamers will appreciate the evolution of technology and the advancements of the aerospace era, including the importance of Canadian participation. Select top senior cadets may even earn the chance to represent Canada on the world stage by participating in an international exchange. Most importantly, Air Cadets aids in developing knowledge of Canadian history and democracy. The cadet program focuses on social development, decision-making and leadership. As cadets acquire skills and knowledge, they pass it along to younger cadets. Every cadet will have the chance to participate in flight activities, and some top senior cadets may even earn a scholarship to obtain their private pilot’s licence. Whether earning a glider pilot licence or private pilot licence, these cadets wear their wings with a pride rarely found in today’s youth" Education Credits for Cadets: in Saskatchewan "Formal process exists for individual student (Grades 10,11,12) to apply once during their high school career for one (1) “Special Educational credit (SEC).” This marked credit is put towards the student’s high school diploma in terms of the number of credits and grade point average. In September, students must apply to the school or school board to receive permission to take a SEC course" Here is a list of just some of the things that Air Cadets Do:   Citizenship Leadership Community Service Drill Sports Marksmanship First Aid Survival Music Aircraft Identification Navigation Aerospace Communication Meteorology Airport Operations Here’s how to join: Step 1: Consult the squadron directory to find an air cadet squadron near you. To become a cadet, you must join one of these local squadrons. The squadron directory is divided by region. Step 2: Contact them. For each air cadet squadron listed in the directory, there is information about meeting location, meeting day and time and how to contact the squadron. Call the squadron if you have questions or show up during one of the training nights to register. Call us if you have difficulties getting in touch with the squadron. Step 3: Fill-out the registration form that will be provided to you by the squadron personnel, and have it signed by your parents. You will also need a proof of provincial health coverage and legal residency (Birth certificate, Citizenship Certificate, etc.). Some squadrons may have local requirements as well, such as a city resident card. Our squadron has a marksmanship team and a biathlon team we do a lot of wilderness survival training exercises. Today, Air Cadets is one of the premier youth organizations in Canada" Events: - The Preeceville Curling Club is hosting a seniors 200 plus Bonspiel from January 11th to January 15th. For informaiton or to enter contact Roy at 306-547-4610 of Joe at 547-3117. - The walking club is running Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week, 9 till 10 am at the Legion Hall. Everyone welcome. All you have to bring are clean runners.

- Feb 25th - Whitehawk Arts Council presents The Travelling Mabels. The Travelling Mabels, Voted ACMA 2011 "Group of the Year" are a folk/country female trio full of spirit, spunk and laughter.
