This week we focus on: Making a emergency plan   "It will take you about 20 minutes to make a family emergency plan online. You can then print it out. Before starting, you will need to think about: Safe exits from home and neighbourhood Meeting places to reunite with family or roommates Designated person to pick up children should you be unavailable Contact persons close-by and out-of-town Health and insurance information Places for your pet to stay Risks in your region Location of your fire extinguisher, water valve, electrical panel, gas valve and floor drain " Start Now! Get Prepared:   http://www.getprepared.gc.ca/index-eng.aspx "You may have some of these basic emergency kit items already, such as a flashlight, battery-operated radio, food, water and blankets. The key is to make sure they are organized, easy to find and easy to carry (in a suitcase with wheels or in a backpack) in case you need to evacuate your home. Whatever you do, don't wait for a disaster to happen" Check off the items for your 72-hour emergency kit as you accumulate them. Basic Emergency Kit Items Easy to carry Think of ways that you can pack your emergency kit so that you and those on your emergency plan can easily take the items with you, if necessary Water Two litres of water per person per day (Include small bottles that can be carried easily in case of an evacuation order) Food That won't spoil, such as canned food, energy bars and dried foods (remember to replace the food and water once a year) Manual can opener Flashlight and batteries Battery-powered or wind-up radio Extra batteries First aid kit Special needs items Prescription medications, infant formula or equipment for people with disabilities Extra keys for your car and house Cash Include smaller bills, such as $10 bills (travellers cheques are also useful) and change for payphones Emergency plan Include a copy of it and ensure it contains in-town and out-of-town contact information Link to basic kit page:  http://www.getprepared.gc.ca/cnt/kts/bsc-kt-en.aspx Events: - Sept 12th - 19th Annual Great Pumpkin Contest - 10:00 am at Centennial Park - Categories - Pumpkin, Potato, Cabbage, Zucchini, Onion, Carrot, Turnip, Beet, Kid's Category (creative display of animal or creature using vegetables). All entries must be grown in your own garden, only 1 entry per household per category. All entries should be washed and show ready. A proof of purchase from any Preeceville business must accompany your entry. Entry forms - Town Office and Shop Easy Foods - Sept 12th - Hamburger BBQ at Centennial Park on Saturday from 11:00 am - 1:30 pm. Sponsored by the Preeceville Public Library. - Sept 25th - Preeceville and District Heritage Museum celebrates their 10th Anniversary with a Ethnic Dessert Night  from 7 - 9 PM at Club 60. $10.00 per ticket, only 100 available - available from Lorne Plaxin, John Carlson, Agnes Murrin and Anne's Florist. Ethnic costumes and/or hats are encouraged.
