This week we focus on: Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week



February 11-17, 2018 as Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week in the province.

“This week is an opportunity for Saskatchewan residents to recognize and celebrate our teachers and school staff,” Deputy Premier and Education Minister Gordon Wyant said. “Education professionals in our province work tirelessly to educate and inspire students to reach their full potential and engage in lifelong learning.”

Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week is acknowledged annually across Canada to highlight the invaluable work of education professionals in our schools. This year, the Saskatchewan Association of School Councils (SASC) has chosen the theme Inspiration Through Learning.

"Teachers and staff inspire and motivate learners when they provide students with opportunities to understand, develop and practice positive attitudes and actions that will result in the achievements of their goals and dreams,” SASC Director Joy Bastness said. “They inspire new understanding and skills, initiate new experiences, spark students' interest and enthusiasm, while infusing learning with life and a desire to learn.”


This marks the 31st year that Teacher/Staff Appreciation Week will be celebrated in Saskatchewan.


School Community Councils (SCCs) work with parents and community members to:
share responsibility for the success and well-being of all children and youth; and,
encourage parent, community and youth engagement in school planning and improvement.


Membership
Roles and Responsibilities


SCCs consist of two types of members – elected and appointed. At minimum, SCCs consist of:
five to nine elected parents and community members. The majority of these members must be parents or guardians of students that attend the school;
- appointed members that include:
- the principal;
- one teacher; and
- one or two students from grades 10-12 (if applicable), and
First Nations representatives if students live on-reserve

SCCs can recommend that the board of education appoint other members to the council to increase the representation on the council and to encourage community engagement.


The roles and responsibilities of SCCs include:
encourage parent and community participation in education;
- developing a good understanding of their community including its needs, resources, supports and goals for student learning and well-being;
- cooperating with school staff to develop school-level plans;
- communicating annually with families and community members about their activities and accomplishments;
- accounting publicly for money they spend;
- participating in orientation, training, development and networking opportunities related to SCCs;
upholding confidentiality; and,
- following legislation, regulations and board policies.

SCCs may also provide advice and recommendations to their boards of education, school staff and other organizations about the learning needs and well-being of students.

- Feb 17th - Benefit Pot Luck Supper for Ralph Mills, (who lost his home by fire) Starts at 5:00pm and runs till 7:00pm at the Endeavour School Community Complex. More info at 306-547-5433.

- Feb 27th - Snowmobile Family Fun Day - Starts at 11:00 am - The Rough Rider Snowmobile Club will be hosting this event. This shelter is located approximately 7 km NW of Hinchcliffe. Hot dogs and hot chocolate will be provided by the club. Riders will be entered to win 1 of 4 family local dining gift certificates. There will also be a door prize for school aged children.
